you win some, you lose some

On Saturday I won a race. The first since 2005. It was my first race with my new team*. Though I came across the line by myself, I forgot to zip up my jersey until people started signaling me. My completely original victory salute appears to be me desperately struggling with my jersey zipper.
Saturday was also my Grandma’s birthday. She had been ill for a while, struggling with C.O.P.D. Starting last year, she was in and out of hospitals & convalescent homes, with very little time in the one place she wanted to be — her home. In order to keep breathing, she had to be hooked up to all sorts of machines and pumped with drugs. More than once she told me that she was miserable, but not yet ready to go.
On her birthday she decided that she was finally ready. She was showered with well-wishes and birthday greetings from her loved ones, she heard that I won my race, and she died at 11:00 that night. Sunday would have been her anniversary with my Grandpa, who died after celebrating their 50th year together. I like to imagine that he was waiting for her with dinner reservations and an armful of flowers. She loved flowers.
It’s been quite a week.
